In the Western world, art is primarily conceived of as something to display on the walls of galleries or museums. For this exercise, visit an art gallery in your local community, but instead of focusing on the art, focus on the setting and context. Where is the art being displayed? Why is it being displayed in this way? Is the gallery attempting to make you think in a particular way? Would the work being displayed at this gallery be considered acceptable for the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.? What about an avant-garde art studio in New York City? Art, even in a gallery setting, exists within a cultural context that tells us as much about the art as the paintings, photographs, videos, etc., do themselves.
Share your experience of visiting an art gallery on your class’s online forum. If you have never visited an art gallery consider some other form of art. Describe how the art was displayed. What implicit cultural messages are being generated by the display space? Could you run around, laugh, and dance in this space? Did you feel welcome in the gallery? What does context tell us about art?
