We are fortunate to live in a time when space is relatively “clean,” meaning there are is no longer a vast number of objects floating around that haven’t already been pulled in to some other mass. That said, many of us have spent at least a few minutes looking to the skies and hoping that Earth continues to be spared from the types of devastating impacts that are part of our earlier Earth history. Here you will explore some different virtual impact scenarios and try to understand what factors create the worst impacts.
- Go to Perdue’s Impact: Earth! website: http://www.purdue.edu/impactearth/
- Create three different impact scenarios by adjusting the parameters in each category that the webpage provides. Your goal should be to create three unique scenarios that provide widely different impact results.
Hint: You can adjust the size and density of your object in “Projectile Parameters,” your angle and velocity of impact in “Impact Parameters,” and the type of Earth surface you hit with “Target Parameters.”
